• From the Ground Up

The philosophy on the downswing is from the ground up. There are parameters we must follow, but this is the basic fundamental approach. Anytime we force the club back down with our hands we are subject to harsh conditions like compensations and bad habits. We must use the lower body as the engine of the swing that delivers the club.

There are two objectives on the downswing.

First, we must pivot off our back foot and transfer our weight to the font foot. This is the very first move on the downswing. It initiates the transfer from backswing to downswing and pulls the club back down to the ball. When we shift our weight to back to the target we set the downswing in motion.

Technical Principle #1:  the lead hip is stacked above the lead hip at impact.

This is a signal that you have shifted your weight properly on the downswing. At impact your lead hip is directly above your lead foot, which proves that the majority of your weight has transferred to the front foot.  If you have access to video analysis, I would recommend asking your teaching professional to identify whether or not you apply this technical principle. We can’t neglect the weight shit, it’s most important ingredient on the downswing.

Second, we must rotate and clear our lead side out of the way for the arms to maneuver through the hitting area. The second half of the downswing is all about rotation. We don’t want to stop rotating until our belt buckle fights its way back to the target. Our lower body must lead the way.

Technical Principle #2: the hips are more open to the target than the shoulders at impact.

This principle helps us determine if our lower body has properly rotated on the downswing.  When the lower body leads the upper body, our hips will be more open to the target than the shoulder at impact. It tells us that we have initiated the downswing from the ground up.
