There are two steps to fixing your slice and/or pull hook. You need to know why you are causing it and then you need to know how to fix it. Let’s get started.
Slicing and pull hooking come from the same family of swing flaws, an outside to inside path across the ball. The following is a manifesto for anyone who is experiencing these ailments. By the way, if you’re a baseball or hockey player your whole concept of how to hit the ball is wrong. But don’t get discouraged; I’m about to share a valuable solution.
Slicing and pull hooking the golf ball is the most common ailment in the game. The reason is because most amateurs initiate the downswing with the upper body. They force the club back down to the ball and release the hands too early.
PRESCRIPTION: Don’t start the downswing with your hands. That pulls the right shoulder out, throwing the club over the top on a steep out-to-in path. The result is a weak arms only swing. By initiating the downswing from the ground up, you’ll be able to deliver the club more from the inside.
TIP: crack the whip
Have you ever seen someone crack a whip before? Did you notice when they release their hands? If they released their hands from the top they ruin all the power. Instead, they never release their hands until the very last second. This creates all the speed for the crack. It’s very similar to the golf swing – crack the whip at impact, not from the top.
TIP: develop your footwork
You need to learn the proper footwork during the golf swing. This is your roadmap to victory over the slice. Very few golfers who have good footwork suffer from a slicing ball flight. Proper footwork facilitates two vital moves on the downswing; the weight transfer and body rotation. This helps you deliver the club from the inside – your key to eliminating the slice. It all starts with footwork. Learn to initiate the downswing from the ground up and you won’t ever slice or pull hook again.
